Depression Does Not Have to Keep Weighing You Down

by | Aug 10, 2026 | Counseling and Training

Depression can feel like carrying a weight nobody else can see. You get up in the morning, go through the motions, smile when you need to smile, but inside, you feel exhausted. Your thoughts tell you, “Nothing is ever going to change. You’ll always feel this way.” But those feelings do not have the final word. God does.

The Bible says, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God” (Psalm 42:11, KJV).

Notice that David didn’t deny how he felt. He acknowledged that his soul was cast down, but then he spoke back to his emotions: “Hope thou in God.”

You Are More Than What You Feel

Depression may describe what you are experiencing, but it does not define who you are.

You are still God’s creation. You are still valuable. You still have purpose. And even when you cannot see the way forward, God has not abandoned you.

Isaiah 41:10 says, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God.”

You may feel alone, but God says, “I am with thee.” You may feel overwhelmed, but God says, “I will strengthen thee.”

Don’t allow today’s feelings to write tomorrow’s story.

Trevor’s Testimony

Trevor had battled depression for years. He woke up every morning feeling as though a heavy cloud followed him everywhere. Eventually, he began believing that nothing would ever change.

Then Trevor began changing what he allowed to dominate his thinking. Every morning he read Psalm 118:24: “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

At first, Trevor didn’t feel joyful. But he kept choosing truth over his feelings. He sought help, surrounded himself with encouraging people, prayed, and filled his mind with God’s Word.

Little by little, the darkness began to lift. Trevor later said, “I thought I needed to feel better before I could have hope. I discovered that hope helped me begin to feel better.”

Elizabeth’s Testimony

Elizabeth experienced depression following a painful season of loss. She felt forgotten and wondered whether life would ever feel normal again.

One evening she read Psalm 34:18: “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Those words changed her perspective. Elizabeth realized that her brokenness had not driven God away. He was near.

She began praying daily, talking honestly with trusted people, and intentionally looking for God’s goodness in ordinary moments. Her circumstances didn’t change overnight, but Elizabeth did.

Months later she said, “God didn’t just bring me through the valley. He taught me that I was never walking through it alone.”

Your Story Isn’t Finished

Maybe you’re in that valley today. Don’t mistake a difficult chapter for the ending of your story.

Keep believing. Keep praying. Keep reaching out. Keep moving forward.

Psalm 30:5 reminds us, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”

Your night season is not forever.

There is still purpose ahead of you. There are still people you can encourage. There are still prayers God can answer and new chapters waiting to be written.

Depression does not have to keep weighing you down. With God’s help, you can rise again.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that You are near to the brokenhearted. You know every burden I carry and every battle taking place within my mind. When I feel discouraged, remind me that my feelings do not determine my future—You do.

Lord, lift the heaviness from my heart. Renew my mind with Your truth. Give me strength for today, hope for tomorrow, and courage to keep moving forward. Surround me with people who will encourage me and help me walk toward healing.

I choose today to put my hope in You. I believe that this difficult season will not have the final word. My story isn’t finished. Joy is coming in the morning.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
