What is Temperament, Character, and Personality; and why should it matter to me? Part 1: Temperament

by | Jul 28, 2023 | Counseling and Training

Great question and many others have inquired about this subject matter.
In order to fully understand temperament, it is fist necessary to define what it is not.
Temperament does not mean temper, raging, anger, and exploding, offended or getting upset. Even though all five temperament types have anger components to them; temperament refers to you as a unique creation of God, a Divine masterpiece, created by God and for God’s service and glory.
Psalms 139:13 reveals, “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.
From this verse, we see God’s work of design to form and create individuals according to His plan. We call that plan and design – temperament.
There are five Temperament types that God has created and designed to give direction and meaning to people’s lives. They are called sanguine (warm, pleasant), supine (needs acceptance and to be invited), phlegmatic (slow-moving, apathetic), choleric (quick to react, hot tempered) and melancholy (deep thinker). While it is out of scope to go into detail of each one in this post, the focus is to introduce and define temperament.
In part 2, we will look at Character.
